The Tsunami affected Sambodhi

Even though we may not be able to help the whole community at first. Helping one child at a time would start making a difference. The mission of this program is to improve the life of them. These destitute humans need out support. Our guiders and mostly our love. It is not possible to clap with one hand with collective help we can gracefully go future into helping these needy humans. Presently we are face with even worst circumstances here in Sri Lanka after years of prolonged civil war with ethnic conflicts destroying the countries economy and living standard. Also on 26th December 2004, the tsunami struck the coastal belt in Sri Lanka’s whole country’s economy. Sambodhi the disabler’s home in Galle, Sri Lanka was affected severally from the tsunami. Out of 120 disablers inmates, 40 were either missing of dead. Galle town is located conveniently on the main highway running from Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka to Mathara a city located in the southern belt. Sambodhi the home for disables is only 2-3 kms from the city of Galle. In September 1964 Sambodhi was donated by Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Dissanayaka to run a home for the disables. The building covers 20,000 Sq.Fts and build on little over 180 Perches of land with a wall right around. By early 1980s there were only 6 homes that were managed by the Sambodhi welfare society. In 1980s when Sambodhi home in Galle was at its prime, they had about 250 disabled persons served by a staff of 55 workers. In 1995 Mr. B. R. Dissanayaka passed away, and the home continued operating under Sambodhi welfare society. In 1998 a new community was appointed. Until year 2003 this community was managing the 6 facilities. From 1998 to 2003 it run almost like a prison over a concentration camp even there had been extensive media coverage about some of the incidents at Sambodhi these disputes among the committee members resulted in court proceedings. According to Mr. Anura Dissanayaka the current manager of Sambodhi, the corrupted group of committee members split from the group and started working with other 5 Sambodhi homes.

There after the genuine group of members of the society formed a new committee under Dakshina Lanka Sambodhi Welfare Foundation. The new committee consist of about 30 members. Currently to provide facilities requires at least 9,000 per day. Although they need at least Rs. 250,000 per month to operate the facilities as best. Government offers Rs. 10 per day for each disabled person in the country end of each year. Sambodhi has not even received this amount for the last year. We are met with challenges of implementing this programs as there are no proper accounting and book keeping records available. Management prepare plans setting out long term goals and objectives to short term performances goes, and daily, weekly and annual
reports explaining and documenting how effective the management actions have been at achieving the started goals. The plans also establishes a method and data source for measuring and reporting each goal. Because Sambodhi’s performances of goals reflects sensitivity to NGOs needs and a awareness that the funds are not wasted.
