How the Tsunami affected the Sambodhi
It is a big disaster occurred at 9.26 a.m. on 26th December,2004. It was deadly Tsunami which killed about 40 inmates and destroyed the hostels and goods etc, in them and the remaining inmates had to stay with their clothes on the body they wore.
Because of this Tsunami the other remaining inmates had to be kept at Udugama hospital and Bataduwa temple and the some other several places. Although we had to keep them as such those places were not suitable for such disabled children.
As a results most of these children had to face many difficulties.
For several months these children are afraid of the sea and also its water. And therefore to fade away their fear we could not take them to the sea beach. Some of the children are still in much shock.

PRESENT SITUATION.

At present there are 33 female inmates and 30 male inmates and also there are 11 staff members to look after them in this home. The inmates are in various age groups and suffering from different physical and mental disabilities.

We have been able to reconstruct the destroyed male hostel with aids obtained from Tsunami funds. Now this hostel is separated into two units and functioning as a male and female hostel.
There are mentally and physically disabled children about 20 who are schooling . and they are having various talents for various things. Most of the inmates are having the knowledge of computer operating. They are able to operate the computer with much talent.
Also, an inmate child called Ranjith Ramanayake has been qualified to go to Japan for a foreign scout jambori in Japan in this August.
And also we have received all furniture’s other equipment which needed to inmates after Tsunami disaster

At the beginning there were about 21 children. In 1968 a special school was started relating to this. This has been gradually promoted as a special school assisted by the government. The sambodhi home for the children was first managed by an Association called Magalla Sambodhi welfare society. Later it was managed by the sambodhi welfare society Ltd. But now is managed by an association called Dakshina Lanka Sambodhi Sahayogitha Padanama.
